Big reason workers want to quit (and what’ll retain them)

In a recent study, 38% of workers said they’re actively looking for a new job – and they didn’t list wages as a reason why.

Turns out what really makes them mad is how they’re treated by their employers: 52% aren’t happy with the level of recognition they receive for their work. Plus, 39% said they don’t feel appreciated by their employer.

And while 38% are actively seeking new employment, 49% said they’d leave their current employer for a company that clearly recognized employees for their efforts/contributions.

That data comes from the Globoforce Workforce Mood Tracker report, for which Globoforce, an HR software provider, surveyed 630 U.S. adult workers in September 2011.

Is recognition really what they want?

Some of you may be thinking: Is giving employees more “attaboys” on the back really going to make them more loyal to my company?

It would appear so, according to the results of the Globoforce study.

Other findings:

  • Of the 24% who said they’re satisfied with the level of recognition they receive at work, 63% have no plans of leaving their job, and
  • 52% of those who have no intention of leaving their job had been recognized in the past three months.

Still not convinced dishing out more recognition could be a very big win for your company? Here are two more findings you’ll want to consider:

  • 78% said being recognized motivates them in their work, and
  • 69% said they’d work harder if they felt their efforts were better recognized.

    Money isn’t part of the issue? Seriously? One of the major reasons that many of us feel unappreciated by our employers is that while corporate profits are going up, and executive pay is going up, we are taking more work than ever before without compensation. If anything, real income is dropping for us in spite of doing more.

    Amen to Gus’ comment! We’re still losing positions, increasing workloads, and getting the “attaboy” comments. I would feel valued if management would put their money where their mouth is.
