For our employees to advance in their jobs it is not training they can so themselves. They have to take training from a certified trainer in MSHA(Mine Safety Health Administration), OSHS, CPR/FA, Defensive Driving, Fall Protection, H2S and so forth. We have one on location. This training coordinator puts in 60 hours in a week and we keep her busy.

One of the things our company does is have employees set their own goals during their annual performance review. The goals can be anything from performing better in certain areas to wanting to learn new tasks. The supervisor then sets the goals they see for the employee. During the review, the two discuss what each other need from the other and any training that is necessary. We usually leave it up to the employee to find the training that works for themselves as well as the supervisor.

Thank you, Norma. This is insightful. I, too, have had to scrap my budgeted training coordinator position (which has never been filled anyway due to budget restraints), so it is incumbent upon my two-person HR staff to do all things training. One thing that you didn't mention is that taking responsibility for one's own training actually self-identifies the motivated employee right up front as they will be the ones who opt to take advantage of such a situation. Rock on, Norma!
