Survey: Flexible schedules on the rise

What’s a no-cost benefit more companies are offering to employees and job candidates?

Answer: Flexible scheduling.

Nearly 80% of companies with at least 50 employees let workers periodically change arrival and departure times, according to a recent survey by the Families and Work Institute.

That’s an increase of 16% since 1998.

Some jobs require strict start and end times, but with many positions, flexible scheduling can be a free benefit that employees really value.

    At our place of business there is really only one job that would not allow for flexible scheduling and that would be the reception area (because our office hours are from 8am to 5pm they need to be there during that time). Granted most employees stick to relatively the same schedule once they find one that works for them, but in the case of it being necessary to go to a doctor’s appointment in the morning or afternoon it comes in handy. We also don’t allow for carte blanche in deciding their hours, it’s usually a you should be here between 6 and 9 in the morning. Most employees find it beneficial when trying to balance the work/home life and some have even turned down other positions for other companies that did not offer this.

    Our agency allows flexible scheduling for the majority of positions. It is the one benefit virtually every employee says is a reason they continue to work for the agency. Most supervisors believe that allowing employees flexibility in the work environment is a “win-win” for all since the employee can take care of family responsibilities while be able to keep the work done. In some cases, the employee needs to be flexible to deal with the work load demands as some days may be more packed together and other days are more “open”. Employees are still expected to perform their 40 hours of work each week.

    During employee focus groups, one of the questions was regarding the ability to flex. The majority, by a wide margin, felt it was a very good benefit.

    I change my schedule during the summer to get a little more “weekend”. I work four nine-hour days and use four hours of vacation to get a three day weekend. It worked pretty well, although some weeks I wasn’t able to use the vacation time due to business needs on Friday, but I was still able to get away earlier than usual.
