Web-based interviews: A useful hiring tool?

These days, more people are willing to relocate to find a good job. That increases HR’s talent pool, but it also makes the interview process more difficult and expensive.
Some companies are turning to a new strategy for interviewing candidates from around the country: Web-based interviews.
Vendors such as HireVue have sprung up to move the interview process online. Here’s how it works:
Employers set up an account and record their interview questions. HireVue sends candidates a Web cam and an access code, which they use to answer the questions. Hiring managers watch the videos and decide which candidates to fly in for a face-to-face interview.
Other Web-based interview services include iViewXpress and InterviewStream.
Is it worth it? That all depends on how many remote candidates you need to interview. HireVue sets prices based on how many interviews you conduct, so there could be a lot of savings available compared to paying candidates’ travel costs.
Companies do sacrifice the ability to ask follow-up questions in the initial screening round, unlike a phone interview. But if hiring managers merely want to see candidates answer their questions, Web-based interviewing could be helpful.
Have you ever conducted an online interview? Would you try it? Let us know in the comments section below.
