Could this state’s new law be the start of a nationwide trend?
Connecticut recently passed a law that made it the first state in the country to require employers to provide workers with paid sick leave.
The law requires any company in the service industry with 50 or more employees to allow employees to accrue one hour of sick time for every 40 hours in which they work.
Supporters of the law say it will help an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Connecticut employees.
Opponents, however, believe it will ultimately end up making the state less competitive.
Similar legislation for mandatory paid sick leave has been proposed in 20 different cities and states already, including Denver, Seattle, New York City, Massachusetts and Georgia.
San Francisco and Washington, D.C. are the only two cities required to provide paid sick leave.
