A new proposal would add another group of people to those protected from discrimination in hiring: the unemployed.
The Fair Employment Opportunity Act of 2011 (H.R. 2501) was introduced in the House by Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Henry Johnson, Jr. (D-GA).
The EEOC held hearings on the issue last February.
The proposed bill would prohibit an employer from excluding a job candidate from consideration based on his/her current employment status, and bans companies from inserting “unemployed need not apply” messages in job ads.
