China’s air force has banned its officers and soldiers from drinking at lunch.
Chinese news agency Xinhua reported the new rule without explaining why it was needed at this time.
Under the new rules, air force officers and soldiers may face demerit, demotion or dismissal for drinking alcohol at lunch on working days.
The same penalties apply for anyone in the military branch caught drinking and driving.
Digital breathalyzers are being installed in sentry boxes and posts at parking lots.
A ban on Communist Party officials and civil servants drinking alcohol at lunch on work days last year led to complaints from restaurants that suffered big drops in business.
