Work this one out with your Payroll people: How would you compensate employees with property — in this case, a cemetery plot?
Like many other municipalities, Dade City, FL, has been feeling pinched by hard times.
One large expense: City employees have accumulated nearly $756,000 in paid time off — including sick leave and vacations.
A city employee came up with the idea of exchanging some of that above-ground time for plots and eternity in the city-owned cemetery. The plots go for $350 for residents, $400 for non-residents.
The city attorney dug into it and declared it was legal.
So, Dade City put it in place. Some employees are ready to take the city up on its offer, according to the Web site for Bay News 9, but not anytime soon.
