Still need convincing that the feds are gearing up wage-and-hour enforcement efforts? Wait ’til you hear this.
The Department of Labor just announced the launch of a new application for smartphones — a little gizmo designed to allow employees to keep track of the hours they work and calculate the exact number they should see on their next paycheck.
Here’s how a DOL press release sells the concept: “Users conveniently can track regular work hours, break time and any overtime hours for one or more employers.
“This new technology is significant because, instead of relying on their employers’ records, workers now can keep their own records.”
But this is the payoff: “This information could prove invaluable during a Wage and Hour Division investigation when an employer has failed to maintain accurate employment records,” says the DOL.
Currently, the app only works on the iPhone and iPod Touch. But the feds say they’re working on other software aimed at workers with other types of smartphones. Stay tuned.
