Ever suspected a union organizer was in your midst? New legislation just introduced in Congress may give employers the power to terminate certain organizers.
The bill is called the Truth in Employment Act of 2011. If passed, it would amend the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to allow employers to deny employment to applicants they suspect are union organizers, a.k.a. “salts.”
Salts are union supporters who seek a job at a specific employer to organize a labor union from within the organization.
Under the proposed legislation, not only would employers be allowed to refuse to hire a salt, it appears the bill would also allow employers to terminate a salt after discovering his/her intentions.
That’s good news for employers fearing a union takeover. But the employers praising the bill should temper their expectations for the legislation.
The reason: It mirrors similar bills that have failed to gain traction in Congress in recent years.
We’ll keep you posted.
