Have you ever been asked to participate in a school’s Career Day to encourage students to plan ahead for their future? They can be good ways to get teens to check out future career possibilities.
Career Days usually come with substantial adult supervision.
But a 13-year-old in Dillon, SC, allegedly decided to further his own expressed interest in law enforcement by stealing a police cruiser and taking it for a ride — twice.
His mother saw him bring the cruiser home both times but didn’t see anything wrong with his citizen patrols, police are quoted as saying in wire service reports.
Police say the boy watched someone enter a code to get into the local police department. After he had the code, he entered the building and took the keys to the police car.
Police didn’t notice the cruiser was missing. Residents called to say they saw the boy driving around in the car.
His mother was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was released on $5,000 bond.
The boy is charged with larceny and second-degree burglary. He’s getting to see another part of the justice system — the inside of the Department of Juvenile Justice where he’s in custody.
