Craigslist available to more employers and job-seekers

There’s a lot of talk about how great Craigslist is for posting job ads. Now, more HR pros will be able to use it.

Craigslist recently added new sites for 140 cities, increasing the total number of areas in which the service is available by 25%.

The additions include 87 cities in the U.S., eight in Canada and 45 in other parts of the world, the New York Times reports.

Craigslist charges a fee of $25 per job posting in larger cities (and $75 in San Fransisco). But since most of the new areas are small to mid-sized towns, presumably job listings will be free for those sites.

Sounds like a great way to get a stack of useless resumes to waist time digging through to find maybe one or two that are good. It is much more time and money efficient to use specialized niche boards, where the number of resumes received is smaller and higher quality.

We have had great success here at Tucson Botanical Gardens with Craigslist! Although we do get a great many resumes, we’ve had great candidates come through and hired quite a few! As a small non-profit will a limited budget, Craigslist has been a great service for us – I would encourage others to use it!

All online job positings have pros and cons. Craigslist is becoming more and more popular and well known. Smaller niche boards can be great if qualified people check them.
To avoid mass emails from unqualified people through Craigslist, our firm does not allow applications by email. Applicants must mail hardcopies of their resumes. It’s a simple solution, and provides us with applicants willing to take the time to put together a mailing.

Perhaps, but I’ve gotten several good hires from Craigslist — and you can’t beat the price.

Stacey, I agreed, never allow people to email resumes. We do allow faxes which still cuts down the number since most people don’t have fax at home either.
