A new survey reveals worker attitudes about attending after-work happy hours, and the effect of attendance on careers.
CareerBuilder.com did the survey. The first question was: Do you regularly join your co-workers at happy hours after work? One in five said “yes.”
The majority of those inclined to head over to the local bar said they were under 35 years old. Just a smattering of workers over 55 were among those who said they attended.
Next question: Did happy-hour schmoozing help your career? Almost four out of five said “no.” In fact, some people thought their careers could be hurt by attending happy hours.
Yes, they said, you can build relationships at a company happy hour. But you’re also risking your reputation with bad behavior or loose lips lubricated by alcohol.
