It’s official. Connecticut is the first state to pass legislation mandating paid sick leave for employees.
According to a story in the New York Times, the law will apply to businesses with 50 or more employees, and applies only to service workers — people like waiters, cashiers, nursing home aides, fast food cooks and hair stylists (for a full list of qualifying jobs, check out this entry on the Connecticut Employment law blog).
Manufacturers, national non-profits, independent contractors and temps are exempt from the requirement.
The legislation allows service employees to earn one hour of paid sick time for each 40 hours worked, up to a cap of five paid sick days per year.
Currently, the only other places that mandate paid sick days are San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
