Artificial Intelligence has gone from scaring us to fascinating us.
Let me give you an example: Three years ago, I sat at a conference and listened to HR pros tell me they didn’t want employees touching it, for fear of data breaches and false information. This year, at the same conference, HR pros packed every session on how to get employees to adopt AI and adapt to using it more.
So if we’re determined to use it, how can we do it best?
Take these best practices from ADP.
Naomi Lariviere, Chief Product Owner, VP of Product Management in Innovative Product Solutions, ADP: “Since 2019, we’ve had an AI and Ethics Council. They support us in understanding how this technology works and when we should use it. That’s because it shouldn’t just be that we’re applying technology for technology’s sake. It should be that it’s the right thing to do for this particular set of problems.”
But, at ADP, it doesn’t stop there. There are two more layers. They look at AI use from a compliance angle, considering the laws, potential biases, industry standards and transparency.
Lariviere: “And last but not least, is ethically. You know, sometimes you have great ideas, but sometimes it’s not the right idea to implement because actually it could put another group at a disadvantage. So it’s really looking at those three areas along the journey to really think about what they are going to do.”
But don’t let employees tackle AI blindly.
Lariviere: “So in order to increase your level of adoption and understanding of the technology, you have to educate your associates. So I highly advocate that organizations spend the time to get your employees up and running on this technology.”
Bottom line: To adopt and use AI in the workplace, you want to:
- Understand it. Create a team that will eventually help everyone understand the tech and when they should use it.
- Consider it. Look at AI use from three angles – application to work, compliance within your industry and ethics.
- Teach it. Take the time to help employees use it within those three angles.
AI changes every day. If you keep guardrails around how your employees will apply it to their jobs, they’ll get the most out of it.
