Transcript (edited for clarity):
Let’s say you hire 10 people. Statistically speaking, three of them won’t last the year.
That’s not good, right? After all, you didn’t hire 10 people because you only wanted seven to do the job. You liked and needed them all.
What went wrong? Often, things go wrong early. But here’s help … proven ways to make new employees feel good as soon as they join your company.
Kiran Menon, Senior Director of Product, Phenom: “The moment companies can personalize, can create personas, can create personas of people, of groups they want to build into, that starts coming the advantage.“
You see, every department, team and person is different. And their new employee experience will have to be a little different, too.
Menon: “Sending me a video of the CEO of the company saying this is a great place to work does not make a difference. You know, I’m one of 40,000 people. What I want to hear is, how does my peer view the company. So I have two years of experience, so how does another peer in the sales team with two years of experience feel?“
How about that? I was also surprised to hear that the message is better from peers. But it doesn’t stop there.
Menon: “We always talk about breaking down your preboarding into bite-sized interactions, activities and events. So, ‘Hey, Kiran, you’re five days away from Day 1. Do you know you will be meeting up with Michele, who is going to be your buddy and who is going to help you get started. She has been here and has done that. And she has been through the same career trajectory as you. Now that gives me a sense of comfort.“
So there you have it. Comfort. You want to give every new employee some comfort and something unique. To do that:
- Personalize the experience. Remember what made the employee unique during their interview process and tweak their onboarding toward that.
- Personalize the message. Ask a future peer to send a video message or have a chat with a new employee before or the day they start to give them a feel for the company.
- Personalize the journey. Give them a buddy or mentor – not just the boss – to walk them through the onboarding process, including the formal and informal things.
Every new employee has the potential to become a loyal employee if you give them reasons to love your company right from the start.
