How the Right Tech Stack Leads to Workplace Happiness
We stand at an interesting crossroads: a point in time where modern tech tools are emerging that coincide with a focus on employee quality of life and retention. An investment in key tech stack components can help spearhead both of these important initiatives.
As the way we work has changed in the past four years, many employees have begun taking stock and reassessing their priorities. Spending more time at home in fully remote or hybrid work settings has placed a greater emphasis on work-life balance and a greater premium on the time we spend working and what we do in those hours.
These shifting work paradigms have been hugely important for some employees. In particular, “sandwich generation” workers — those with both children and aging parents — benefit from hybrid and flexible schedules. They’re able to take their kids to school and their parents to the doctor without missing a beat. Having this level of flexibility decreases burnout and demonstrates to workers that their priorities are valid.
Quality of life initiatives are more essential now than they’ve ever been. Nearly half of all employees report increased stress levels surrounding their jobs in recent years, and 77% of professionals have reported burnout in their current positions. Employers need to use every tool in their arsenal to alleviate these stressors for their employees, and investments in a modern HR tech stack can help.
By integrating technologies like automation, AI and the latest data management systems, employers can improve employee quality of life by automating knowledge transfer, improving communication and alleviating the frustrations of menial, repetitive tasks.
Improving Knowledge Transfer
One of the most aggravating aspects of modern work is the transfer of knowledge. Employees spend hours each week searching for answers to process questions or accurate information surrounding products and services. Particularly in the onboarding phase, getting employees the right information can be essential in building long-term trust and job satisfaction. Many HR professionals believe that focusing on the onboarding process can set the tone for retaining engaged employees over time.
Onboarding distributed teams presents a unique challenge in itself. In a previous role, I discovered that the company had over 60% attrition of early leavers (resignations during the probation period). New joiners did not feel connected to the company or know the operational setup. We were able to institute an online onboarding process fairly quickly, lowering the early-leaver attrition by more than 50%.
There are many cases where modernization in onboarding can make a world of difference. Unfortunately, many current methods of sharing knowledge, such as manual documentation and repetitive training sessions, are not only frustrating for employees but can also be time-consuming and prone to errors and inconsistencies.
Data management systems and automation can improve this aspect of the workplace. These databases centralize product information and ensure that accurate, up-to-date data is available to all relevant parties, including sales teams, customer support and any other employees whose job involves firsthand product knowledge.
Using a centralized data management system within a tech stack reduces the need for employees to hunt down information from disparate sources, saving time and reducing frustration.
AI takes knowledge management a step further, analyzing vast amounts of data and providing insights tailored to the specific needs of employees. These systems can learn from interactions and improve over time, offering increasingly relevant information and recommendations. For example, an AI-powered virtual assistant can help new employees get up to speed more quickly by providing answers to frequently asked questions and guiding them through company protocols and procedures.
Removing points of friction from an employee’s day-to-day tasks is a strong way to improve their quality of life. When work is less frustrating, potential stressors that can lead to burnout and employee churn are removed.
Streamlining, Automating With a Tech Stack
A surefire recipe for a disengaged employee is bogging down their day with low-stakes, menial and repetitive tasks. If a worker feels like an aspect of their job could be performed by someone with far fewer qualifications, it can lead to them undervaluing their position. Enhancing employee quality of life means fostering engagement and having them feel like the time they spend working wouldn’t be better spent elsewhere.
Tasks like data entry, scheduling and basic customer service queries consume a large portion of knowledge workers’ days and are prime candidates for automation.
AI-powered tools can handle these routine tasks with precision and speed. For instance, AI-based chatbots can manage basic, straightforward customer service inquiries, allowing human representatives to focus on complex issues that require a personal touch. Similarly, automated scheduling tools can coordinate meetings and appointments without the back-and-forth typically involved in finding mutually available times.
By offloading these tasks to technology, employees can devote more time and energy to work that they find engaging and meaningful. This shift not only enhances productivity but also boosts morale and job satisfaction. Employees feel valued and appreciated when their skills are utilized for higher-level functions rather than repetitive chores.
Focusing on Better Communication
One of the main causes of dissatisfaction in a job is poor communication and a lack of transparency. This is especially true in large organizations, where different departments are isolated from one another, leading to inefficient, inaccurate processes. With tech investments, however, these barriers and silos of information can easily be broken down.
Data management systems and AI-driven communication tools facilitate seamless information-sharing and collaboration. Having one source of truth in the product record ensures that all team members have access to the same accurate information, thereby reducing the risk of miscommunication. For example, if marketing and customer support are working from different product information, customers may be misinformed at the point of purchase and wind up spiking call volumes to support. All departments are interconnected, and it’s essential that they’re working from the same foundation of truth.
AI-powered communication platforms can enhance collaboration further by providing intelligent insights and recommendations. For instance, AI can analyze communication patterns and suggest the best times for meetings, highlight important emails that require immediate attention, and even draft responses based on previous interactions. These tools help employees manage their communication more effectively, reducing stress and improving efficiency.
In the end, tech stack investment shouldn’t only be focused on the company’s bottom line. When choosing the right integrations, consideration should be given to how these investments will impact and improve employee quality of life, particularly at a time when employee retention and satisfaction are so important. When executed successfully, however, these investments can create happier, more productive work environments that are successful on all metrics.
