How a camera and eager employees can fix hiring woes

Could a smartphone camera be the cure for your hiring woes?

We know one organization where it certainly was a big part of the cure. Of course, enthusiastic employees who were willing to talk about and show their love for the company were a big help, too.

What’s Up in This Episode: Fix Your Hiring Woes

In this episode of HRMorning’s 3-Point, our expert, Whitney Wallace, Talent Acquisition Marketing and Sourcing Manager, Baylor Scott & White Health, explains how her company turned the focus to their current employees to recruit, interview and hire new employees. That included turning the camera to those happy employees and using in-house, real-life stories to build a recruiting strategy that attracted more and better-qualified candidates in a difficult market.

Click, watch and listen for more details on how to get great stories, shoot compelling video and fix your hiring woes.

Transcript (edited for clarity):

Could a smartphone camera be the cure for your hiring woes?

Yes, it could be the first part of the solution. The second part … employees who are willing to talk about your great place to work.

Like most companies, healthcare provider Baylor Scott & White struggled to fill roles.

Whitney Wallace, Talent Acquisition Marketing and Sourcing Manager, Baylor Scott & White Health: But we were definitely lacking the employee-to-candidate experience. You definitely couldn’t see inside our organization.

They’d been posting jobs and promoting their company in what you might call generic ways: stock images, simple testimonials, brief descriptions. But they had so much more to show and tell.

Wallace: We have so many great stories to share internally, we just had to jump in and say, ‘Hey, we’re sharing all this greatness internally and talking about why we love working here. We need other people to know.’ We all know we like Baylor Scott & White Health, but other people need to see why we like working at Baylor Scott & White Health. So that’s why we transitioned into our Employee Voice Campaign and moved away from stock images and started using real employee testimonials to place on our career site.

So armed with a smartphone camera, an extra light and some intriguing questions they went to company leaders first to get testimonials. Once they posted their videos in socials and on the company site, Wallace and her team went to employees.

Wallace: We had leaders who’d say, ‘These would be incredible employees to share a story or this candidate made an impact on the community by serving these patients.’ And so we started getting more and more volunteers and getting help from there.

And once those videos hit the mainstream, they took results back to employees. For instance, one employee’s testimonial on social media led to 800 applications. Now that’s results. So to successfully implement video into your recruiting efforts:

  • Find your stories. You probably already have employees who love working at your company.
  • Start at the top. If employees seem reluctant to get on camera, start with leaders. They often set the stage for new initiatives.
  • Share results. When employees see how they can and will impact hiring at the company they already love, they’ll likely share their stories.
