About the Author

Michele McGovern writes. A lot. These days, she covers HR, digging deep into company culture, DEI, leadership, management and the everchanging world of work. In the years between getting a BA in journalism from a state school and writing about HR, she wrote about big-city crime for a wire service and small-town life for local newspapers. She’s a mediocre mom, decent wife, wannabe athlete and consummate pursuer of fun - on land, snow and water. Find her on LinkedIn @michele-mcgovern-writer.

Challenges in leadership

Challenges are an inevitable part of any workplace. When you’re a woman in the workplace, how you face challenges often impacts how others see your ability to lead.

Whether it’s a tight deadline, a complex project, or interpersonal conflicts, how you handle challenges can improve your professional growth, resilience, and workplace environment.

Use Challenges to Improve

Fortunately, you can use challenges to your advantage. Follow these steps to tackle challenges head-on and turn them into opportunities for development and success.

1. Embrace a Growth Mindset

The first step in facing challenges is to adopt a positive growth mindset. Challenges can often be perceived as threats, leading to stress and anxiety.

Instead, try to view them as opportunities to learn and grow. A positive attitude can help you stay motivated and resilient, making it easier to find solutions and overcome obstacles. Remember, every challenge you face and conquer adds to your experience and skill set.

2. Break Down the Problem

When faced with a daunting challenge, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Breaking the problem down into smaller, manageable parts can make it more approachable.

Identify the key components of the issue and tackle them one at a time. This method not only makes the challenge seem less intimidating but also allows you to track your progress and celebrate small victories along the way. Try this Work Breakdown Structure Tool to help break down your goals into their smallest parts.

3. Develop a Plan

Once you’ve broken down the problem, it’s time to develop a plan. Outline the steps you need to take to address each component of the challenge. Set realistic goals and deadlines for each step, and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.

Having a clear plan helps you stay organized and focused, ensuring that you don’t miss any critical steps along the way.

4. Seek Support and Collaboration

You don’t have to face challenges alone. Seeking support from colleagues, mentors or supervisors can provide you with different perspectives and potential solutions.

Collaboration can lead to more innovative and effective approaches to overcoming obstacles. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed and be open to feedback and suggestions from others.

5. Focus on What You Can Control

When challenges arise, it’s easy to get distracted by factors beyond your influence. Instead, concentrate your energy on what you can change. Identify actionable steps that move you forward and let go of the rest.

This shift in focus helps reduce stress and increases your sense of agency. By channeling your effort into controllable aspects, you’ll maintain momentum even in uncertain or difficult circumstances.

6. Reframe Setbacks as Setups for Success

Resilient people don’t just bounce back—they bounce forward. When things don’t go as planned, take a moment to reframe the situation. Ask yourself what new opportunities or insights might emerge from this detour.

Viewing setbacks as stepping stones instead of roadblocks helps you stay optimistic and solutions-oriented. Often, the lessons learned from a difficult experience become the foundation for future success.

7. Learn from the Experience

Every challenge is a learning opportunity. After you’ve faced and overcome a challenge, take some time to reflect on the experience. Consider what worked well and what could have been done differently.

Use these insights to improve your approach to future challenges. Learning from your experiences helps you grow and become more adept at handling obstacles in the workplace.

Staying Resilient

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and continue moving forward. Resilience enables you to persevere through challenges and emerge stronger.

Building resilience involves developing coping strategies, maintaining a positive outlook, and learning from past experiences. Stay resilient by focusing on your strengths, staying committed to your goals, and not letting setbacks deter you.
