Do you know why so many people look for – and find — new jobs on LinkedIn and Indeed? Instead of getting those new jobs with you?
It’s probably because they didn’t know you had a new job for them. Here’s how it often plays out.
Jesus Latoree-Socas, Director of Product-Talent Management, Phenom: “There are a lot of scenarios where I’m interested in growing, I just don’t know where. I don’t know what’s possible. I don’t know where my skill sets could transfer to. I don’t know what roles even exist in this company, especially for some of the bigger corporations, right? You might have thousands of titles, thousands of positions internally.”
The first step to help employees find new careers with you is to make sure they know what’s possible. Sometimes, they only see a linear path. If there’s nothing else, they’ll tap out. They need to see more.
Latoree-Socas: “It’s really about promoting that transparency, bringing those opportunities front and center and giving employees the keys. Give them the keys to own their career. Give them the keys to own their own, what do they want to move into? If they’re not sure, present mentors, present ways to connect to other colleagues internally to talk about those roles.”
From there, they need to understand what’s within their reach, which could be almost anything.
Latoree-Socas: “It’s about presenting opportunities to an employee based on where they are and where they could move into based on different factors, right? It could be, historically, that people have migrated or been promoted or moved from one function to another. What’s proven to be effective? And two, how do your skills transfer?”
So, to help employees find new careers without leaving your organization:
- Open up. Advertise and promote open positions within your company for only your current employees to see and apply.
- Build it up. Create space and opportunities for employees to connect with colleagues and mentors to find out about jobs moves and new careers.
- Skill it up. Help employees find the paths that suit their skills. Or help them build the skills to suit the careers that interest them.
There’s no need for you to lose employees when career opportunities exist in your company. Take the steps to move the right people into the right roles now.
