Training has never been more critical to retaining great employees and preserving your organization’s skills base and passing down institutional knowledge.

HR Morning’s readers are acutely aware of just how important a role training and development plays.

Even as we all struggle with the challenges spawned by the coronavirus T&D is consistently among the areas our membership wants to read about.

In our most recent customer survey, 55% tagged Employee Training & Development as their top area of interest.

As organizations work to meet the need for specific skill sets, 45% say they are upskilling employees for their current jobs, according to Adecco Group’s Compensation and Workforce Trends survey. An additional 35% are retraining employees to be redeployed to other areas of their organization.

T&D investment is huge, but is it effective?

Meanwhile, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has released a white paper that highlights the need to shift how we approach training investments.

The paper points out that U.S. private sector training and development investment remains massive — an estimated $28 billion a year for tuition reimbursement, $177 billion for formal education and training, and over $400 billion for informal training.

But, the authors emphasize, there is little solid data on what works and what doesn’t and an urgent need for organizations to develop and implement training and development best practices.

To help keep you up to date on the latest training insights from experts and from your peers, here’s a quick look at popular HR Morning training & development stories and webinars from the last year.

Just click on the titles below to read more.

Great training is key to creating a positive employee experience

For firms and HR professionals trying to create a positive employee experience, it’s essential that your team of in-house trainers is ready to lead the way.

But who will train the trainers?

If you truly want learning to take place, it’s best to give your manager/trainers the help they need to take training to the next level, so you can keep improving employees’ experience at your organization.

We’ve shared 10 proven approaches here.

Training and development return on investment

During the COVID-19 pandemic, you have had to do more with less. You need to figure out how to get a big bang for Training & Development (T&D) investments.

Along with challenges, however, this crisis has also revealed opportunities. One you might not have considered before is training and development and, specifically, internet-based leadership coaching.

In this story, we take a look at how you can decide who on your team will benefit from intensive, tailored online training – and then share the knowledge and confidence they’ve gained with the rest of your team.

Building a pipeline of skilled workers

Of course, you can’t forget about the other end of the talent pipeline while building your leadership bench.

We’re sharing this case study from our HR Morning Insider members-only library to inspire you to leverage training opportunities to grab the attention of younger prospects and get them ready to contribute on Day one.

Managing During Change in the Workplace: Cultivate an Agile Workforce

If your team can’t adapt in times of change, they’re left feeling fearful and uncertain – which takes a big toll on engagement, productivity and morale.

Your organization’s survival depends on being prepared for these disruptions and making sure at the core, your organization is strong and nimble.

In this 60-minute Premier Learning workshop, change management expert Michelle Coussens shares her insights into:

  • Identifying traits of adaptable workers in your recruiting and hiring processes
  • Guiding an employee’s curiosity toward innovative productivity
  • Shifting from “that’s how we’ve always done it” to “that’s how we could do it better”
  • Driving continuous improvement by quickly responding to changing trends, innovation, destabilization, and industry shifts
  • Helping your team to think critically about ways to streamline operations and processes

5 proven keys to training success

As seasoned HR pros, you know what works well in your training and development program. And you know the challenges you face getting your T&D priorities funded while so many other initiatives are competing for investment.

In this article, we take a look at how five common aspects of training programs impact the long-term return on your organization’s biggest investment – finding and keeping the best employees.

Get it right and you’ll be able to show leadership where their investment is going and the very real returns they’re getting back — in employee talent and engagement, and in dollars and cents.
